SSM in Laparoscopic and Robotic surgery

The Special Study Module will give the student a good experience of Laparoscopic & Robotic surgery – both Gynaecological and general, as well as Robotic surgery. Trainees will attend theatre sessions and also gain experience of organising , running and attending Postgraduate courses and practical hands on workshops in Laparoscopic surgery. They will be able to develop laparoscopic skills on Models and Simulators. Attend and assist in theatre and participate in courses

 Aims
1: To Experience the developments in laparoscopic and robotic surgery
2: To learn and develop new skills Gynaecological Laparoscopic surgery with the potential of inspiring a career in laparoscopic surgery
 

Scholar & Scientist(Knowledge & Understanding) 
The Student will be able to
  1. Explain the advantages of laparoscopic surgery vs open surgery
  2. Describe the different pieces of equipment used
  3. Describe the different entry techniques
  4. Describe the different energy sources used ( Biploar, Monopolar, Harmonic)
  5. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of robotic surgery vs Straight stick surgery
  6. Understand laparoscopic pelvic anatomy and common gynaecological procedures

Practitioner(Professional/Practical Skills) 
  1. Demonstrate practical skills ( Port insertion, practical exercises – including stacking cubes, cutting shapes, suturing)
  2. Have experience of Docking and robotic surgery
  3. Perform  exercises on robotic simulator

Professionalism(Attitudes & Behaviour)
The Student should be able to
  1. Appreciate the importance of teamwork in laparoscopic and robotic surgery- including role of all health care professionals
  2. Importance of communication
  3. Importance of being fully aware of equipment and training before use
  4. Appreciate calling for help when needed

Assessment/Appraisal 
Sign-off on MyProgress for SSM after satisfactory completion of SSM logbook (reflections, career pathway etc) plus successful completion of any in-house assessments.
 
Final Assessment will involve a :
  • 15 minute presentation to departmental demonstration or peers
AND
  • 15 minute practical demonstration.

Feedback on SSMs will be collected from the student via the SSM Rogo survey. Please list below any alternative ways in which you might collect feedback on your SSM from students.
SSM survey will be collected  from each students asking about ways of improvement and quality of SSM
